While men have been practicing cheesy pick-up lines and ebook dating techniques, the answer to improving their love lives might just be as simple as great smile and a gentle touch on a woman’s arm.

According to an article in The Daily Mail, a study found that “two-thirds of women agreed to dance with a man who touched her on the arm for a second or two while making the request.

When the same man kept his hands by his side while asking women to dance, his success rate fell by half.”

According to the same study, touching a woman on the arm lightly also made her more inclined to “give out her phone number when approached in the street.”

Why does the light arm touch work? Two reasons. First, initiating physical contact is a sign of dominance, and women as a whole are generally attracted to more dominant men. Second, a light touch on the arm is friendly, connective, non-sexual and non-threatening in nature, so it doesn’t throw up any red flags, or make us feel like we need to defend ourselves. (The way a woman probably would, say, if someone she didn’t know tried to touch her leg, for instance.)
