A lot of guys write to me and ask, “How can I get my ex girlfriend back”?

My first question is always, “Why in the world do you want her back?”

After all, whatever it was (cheating, boredom, jealousy, insecurity, nagging) that broke you up in round one (or round forty-seven) will likely still be there if you get back together. Right? That is, of course, unless one of you has been abducted by a cult, or struck by massive volts from fallen power line. Otherwise, you’ll still be the same old people with the same old problems. Or what if the connection you have is so amazing, so fantastic, so meant to be that you don’t want to imagine your life without her?

They promise, in fact, to load you up with sneaky psychological tricks to get her to beg you to come back, make your ex girlfriend insanely jealous, and even offer a “blueprint” to get her back into bed with you.

With millions looking for love online, sweetheart scams (also known as 419 scams ) are occurring in epic proportions. And many are finding out they’ve lost a lot more than their hearts.

How does it work?

Dating scammers use several common methods to get you to part with your money. Below, you’ll find the most common.

The I’m Working Abroad and I Can’t Cash My Paycheck Scam
The scammer tells the victim that they’re working out of the country, but they’re having a hard time cashing their paycheck at a foreign bank. They ask you if you’ll cash a money order for them, and wire the money.

What happens next:
You deposit the money order, wire the cash, and all is lovely until a few days later when your bank discovers that the money order is fake and debits your account for the full amount. Bad news for you, as you’ve already sent the cash to Nigeria.

The I Was On My Way To The Airport And I Got Into A Terrible Accident Scam
You’ve met online, you’ve made a connection, and he/she can’t wait to be with you, so you send money for a plane ticket. Bad news! On the way to the airport, your date meets with a terrible accident and shockingly, the hospital only takes cash.

What happens next:
Maybe you talk on the phone to a fake hospital administrator, maybe you just send the money right away. Either way, your sweetheart’s medical issues will continue to get worse, and more expensive until you run out of cash. Then, you’ll never hear from them again.

The Great Expectations Scam
You sign up via high pressure sales tactics with a local dating agency only to discover they’ve misrepresented the number of members, number of potential matches for you, or number of couples who’ve met through their service — but by the time you find out, you’re already past their 3-day contract cancellation window.

What happens next:
You’re probably out thousands of dollars. Check with your state Attorney General to see what your next steps are, and mention the Arizona Attorney General’s case.

How to protect yourself:

1) Don’t send money to someone you’ve never met in person. Sweetheart scammers will take months to set you up, and it will feel like a real relationship.

2) Most internet dating scams originate in Nigeria and Russia, so be extremely cautious with dating anyone living in those regions, even if they pretend to be from the UK or USA.

3) Stay on the dating site to communicate, don’t give out your personal email. Many sites are set up to flag members who ask for money and shut them down.

4) Guard your account information and personal information carefully

5) Some dating sites claim to protect you from scams, however you should always be sure to follow Internet safety precautions.

6) Don’t send money.

7) Trust your gut instinct. Many victims of Internet crime have reported feeling like something was “not quite right.” Pay attention to what your instincts are telling you.

Dating Book Review:

(3 out of 5 hearts = we like it!)

If you can get over the idea of checking out of the bookstore with a book “for dummies” under your arm, you might just get a lot of valuable dating advice from this classic dating book. (I know you ladies are tough, after all, most of you have walked out of a bookstore with Stop Getting Dumped! under your arm, so Dating for Dummies is a piece of cake. )

As with other books in the “Dummies” series, this dating book is chock full of checklists and easy-to follow instructions, with a lot of useful information on dating etiquette, first dates, kissing protocol, and even tougher topics like date rape. Dating for Dummies is authored by D. Joy Browne, a well-known radio personality with a lot of common sense.

What’s to Like: Lots of helpful pointers on dating topics ranging from where to meet someone to kissing etiquette, to good first date ideas to date hygiene (shower!)

What’s Not To Like: Dr. Browne suggests you don’t date for a year after your divorce, which to many people might seem like a verrrrrry long time, and a number of readers have pointed out small contradictions.

The Verdict: Dating for Dummies is a pretty smart dating manual. And good news for those who blush easily — instead of flashing your personal life all over the bookstore, you can now download it online.

My (formerly) significant other 71%

The dog 1%

We’d work it out 28%

In other words, over two-thirds of people would make their significant other sleep outside before they kicked out their dog!

7 Things To Do If You’re Dateless on Valentine’s Day

No other holiday drives home the fact that you’re single so much as Valentine’s Day. The mushy diamond commercials. The candy. The overpowering stench of roses in the hallways of your office building. For the uninvolved, it can be downright annoying. For those who want to be in a relationship but aren’t, it can be utterly painful.

But, there’s lots of fun to be had if you know where to look: Below you’ll find seven fun dateless options that will make even your most blissfully-coupled friends envious of your Valentine’s Day plans.

1) Recycle Your Ex

Throw a singles-only party where everyone brings an ex who was nice, but just not “The One.” (Sort of a People Potluck.)
Add snacks, a few mixed drinks, and you’ve got yourself a Valentine’s day blast.

2) Vegas, Baby

Get Some friends together, take a long weekend, (and a cheap flight) and head to the most singles-friendly destination on the planet.
Do it right, and you won’t even remember it’s February 14.

3) Give a Day of Service

Instead of spending the day sitting around and moping about your love life, spend a day helping others. Whether you swing a hammer at a Habitat for Humanity house or serve dinner at your local homeless shelter, nothing makes us feel better, or appreciate what we do have than helping others less fortunate.

4) Do Your Taxes

Okay, so this one isn’t really going to be that much fun, but think of it this way: every restaurant in town is going to be booked anyway,
and you’ll have a HUGE weight off your shoulders for the next two months. Plus, filing early can shorten your refund time by weeks!

5) Throw an Anti-Love Movie Fest

Invite a few friends, load up on slashers and cheese-corn, and camp out on the sofa. Nothing will keep your mind Valentine’s Day-free
like screaming until you’re hoarse and scaring the crap out of yourself and five or six of your closest pals.

6) Babysit for some married friends or a single parent with a hot date

Finding a babysitter on a weekend Valentine’s Day is about as complicated as determining the molecular formula of SPAM.
Take the pressure off somebody who really needs a little romance in their lives by offering to babysit while they head out for a
night on the town. It’s not exactly glamorous, but the good karma will follow you around for the rest of the year.
(Besides, if you’re not getting lucky on Valentine’s Day, at least somebody should…)

7) Throw a Pajama Party or Poker Night

You’re never too old to invite the girls over for a night of junk food, amateur pedicures and girl talk.

Are You Too Smart To Date? By Lisa Daily

I am pretty smart.

Not Marilyn vos Savant smart, mind you, but always-the-first-one-at-the-table-to-figure-out-the-tip smart. Knows most of the answers on “Cash Cab” smart.

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to end up married to a guy I considered to be at least slightly brighter than I am. I’m not sure why, but smack at the top on my laundry list of must-haves, there it’s always been: A high IQ, wedged in between a dry sense of humor, good teeth, and a working knowledge of basic chemistry. Nice hamstrings a plus.

Most of my female friends (secretly) feel the same. It’s not that we’re a bunch of Barbies looking for a guy who can squeeze the word asynapsis into everyday conversation, or explain the inner workings of quantum physics and nuclear fission to us over linguine and string bean casserole every night while we stare blankly into space and wonder what happened today on Days of Our Lives. It’s just that most women, when we think about long-term relationships, want to marry up. Biology compels us to seek out the best possible long-term mate we can snag for our own. In fact, statistics show we’re looking for a man who is taller, older and smarter. Which is lucky, because men, apparently, are looking to be with someone shorter, younger and (gasp) dumber.

According to two recent studies, in Britain and the United States, smarter girls were less likely to find a man who wanted to marry them. More bad news for girl geniuses, their chances were reduced dramatically in direct relation to their level of intelligence.

For each 16-point jump in their IQ, their marriage prospects decreased by 40 percent.

In contrast, boys’ chances for marriage increased by 35 percent with each 16-point rise.

The British study measured the IQ of 900 11-year-olds, revisiting them 40 years later to note how their lives had progressed. Their conclusion: men like to be in control of a relationship.

Another study at the University of Michigan, suggested that men would rather marry women in subordinate jobs because they think that high-powered career women are more likely to commit adultery.

According to a quote in the Daily Mail from lead scientist Dr. Stephanie Brown, “The hypothesis is that there are evolutionary pressures on males to take steps to minimize the risk of raising offspring that are not their own.”

So what’s the deal? One theory is that men want women who will stay home, raise the children and care for them.

Most of the press so far on this study has taken the stance that smart chicks are basically out of luck – no man will want them. (This is a common theme in the media – You’re over 30? You’ll never get married! You have kids? You’ll never get married! You have an MBA from Harvard? You’ll never get married!) I wonder though, do smart women know something the rest of us don’t? (I mean, besides the molecular formula of spam…) Maybe it’s not that smart women can’t find husbands. Maybe they’ve seen the inventory, weighed their many options and decided to go it alone instead. Maybe some smart women just find the idea of being a wife unappealing.

As a smart girl who found my perfect match in a very smart guy, the study makes perfect sense to me. On the flip side, I have to say I was a more than a little disturbed when I began to wonder if my steady stream of boyfriends and occasional proposals meant I was the slightly dumber girl of their dreams.

Prepared for a duel, I approached my sweetie and asked. When it came to relationships, was he looking for someone smarter than him? Or someone dumber? He smiled, and answered, “someone exactly as smart.” (I bought it, so maybe he is the smart one after all.)

As for smart girls who are looking to find love and marriage, don’t despair. You don’t have to be a short 23-year old with the IQ of a sand gnat to find your dream guy. Despite studies that say otherwise, even the brightest among us can find Mr. Right. Marilyn vos Savant, who is the smartest tested woman in the world, found her match in husband Robert Jarvik, inventor of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart. It just goes to prove, there’s someone out there for everyone : He’s not only smart enough to steal her heart, he can build her one from scratch.

What Makes Someone More Likely to Cheat?

A new study in Psychology Today found that having certain characteristics may make someone more prone to cheating. This week on DAYTIME I’ll tell you why some people are more likely to be unfaithful than others.

Do tall people cheat more?
Tall women are more likely to cheat than shorter women — experts aren’t sure if it’s related to testosterone (which may influence both height and infidelity) or something else, but it certainly makes you think twice about picking up chicks at the Big And Tall store.

Are women more likely to cheat at certain times of the month? Yes — women are more likely to cheat when they’re ovulating. What’s more, they tend to go for really masculine, socially-dominant guys — the kind with the prominent brow and strong jawlines.

Do people with high self-esteem cheat more or cheat less?
This is sort of a trick question. The answer is that women with low self-esteem tend to cheat more often (they’re looking for a guy to validate them), and men with high self-esteem tend to cheat more often (they feel entitled.) If a guy is wealthy, it magnifies the effect. (I know, I know — rich, arrogant men cheat more? Who knew?!? )

How does the environment affect the likelihood that someone will cheat?
The more opportunities a person has to cheat, the more often they will. (This is why numbers of women who cheat correlates with the number of women in the workforce. Back in the 50s, women cheated significantly less than men - now, they’re about equal.

Are there any other factors that make someone more likely to cheat?
Absolutely. History of cheating is the strongest indicator, but some personality traits play a role as well: Extroverts and people who are open-minded cheat more. People who are agreeable and conscientious cheat less.
